Community Service and Social Events
The Nurture Program is firmly committed to providing service opportunities for kids of all ages. We often combine service with a fun social outing, but sometimes, we do one without the other. Here are some of the service/social events we’ve sponsored recently.
Cleaning Up Wall Street
Mardi Gras Parade
Offering Spare Change to Feed the Hungry
Slumber Parties/Lock-Ins
Annual Hunger Banquet
Climbing at Climbmax
Women’s Circle (ages 14-24)
Asheville Greenworks River Clean-Up
Selling Hand-Crafted Products to Raise Money for Non-Profits
Scarowinds
Working at Manna Food Bank
Movies
Picking Produce at a Local, Organic Farm
Ice Skating
Some of our younger kids focus their service efforts on our own Jubilee! community. For example, our 1st and 2nd grade class has helped with several fundraisers for Shayla – a young member of our Nurture Program currently battling Stage 4 cancer.
The middle-schoolers and teens also organize several fundraisers throughout the year to raise money for their own activities. These often involve food – especially on the 2nd Sundays of the month.
Family Outings
The Nurture Program also wants families to become acquainted with one another. Some family outings occur off-site. Others happen downstairs, usually after Sunday classes. Examples include:
Snow Tubing
River Tubing
Eliada Homes “Castle in the Corn” Maze
Thanksgiving Potluck
Carols and Cookies
Extended Field Trips
We try to offer extended, off-site field trips for our middle-schoolers and teens. These usually happen in the summer. Right now, our middle-school group is planning for their trip to Washington, D.C. in the summer of 2010! Past adventures include:
Haiti
Heifer International Ranches in both Maryland and Arkansas
Camping Trips
Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota
Mountaintop Removal Tour
