A Tribute to Duke Ellington
…Wednesday, July 13th @ 7:30 pm
Pianist Michael Jefry Stevens will perform a tribute to the master pianist and composer Duke Ellington on Wednesday, July 13 at Jubilee!. Joining Michael will be Zack Page on bass and Christian Howes on violin.  Mr. Howes is a wonderful new addition to the Asheville music scene.  From 2001-2009, Howes became an in-demand violinist on the New York scene, collaborating with a bevy of top shelf jazz artists, including Greg Osby, D.D. Jackson, Frank Vignola, Joel Harrison, Dafnis Prieto, Dave Samuels, Spyro Gyra, and a 4-year chair in Bill Evans’ “Soulgrass” band. The trio will perform a selection of Ellington compositions including In a Mellow Tone, In a Sentimental Mood and Don’t Get Around Much Anymore. A suggested donation of $15 per person is asked. This concert is sponsored by the World Beat Band.  Questions?  Call Daniel at (828) 775-6287.

Four New Board Members Selected
This month we are saying hello to four new persons who began their three-year terms on July 1st.  The four new members are Barbara Brady, Fred Racey, Ray Raymond and David Robertson. Each brings unique gifts to share and in coming weeks you can read about them in this newsletter.  In the June 10th edition of Vision we shared information about Barbara and in the June 24 edition we featured Fred Racey. In this edition, we are featuring Ray Raymond.

Ray Raymond—My wife, Pam, and I joined Jubilee in 1991. It was exactly what we were looking for. Prior to serving on the board in 2005, I was the co-chair of the Building Renovation Team along with Hardy Legwin.  It was a big project, very stressful and required a lot of fast decisions.  I am proud of what we achieved working with the community and the contractor.  The changes we made to the building have allowed Jubilee! to grow and attract children to the now healthy downstairs area.  I continue to serve as the primary facilities/operations team contact. Having served on the board previously, I come in ready to serve the community with a good understanding of its history, practices, bylaws and traditions.  I enjoyed my first board membership and expect that this time will be even better, having gained more years of experience in life and Jubilee!.  I enjoy the camaraderie and team work that goes into something bigger than myself. Jubilee! only operates successfully as a group of individuals working together.  I think I can contribute to this on-going success and expand the efforts and reach of the Jubilee! Community.  I was also involved with a team of concerned Jubilants addressing our policy for Safe Sanctuary.  We wrote it and it continues to serve the community. In terms of skills that I bring to the board…I’ve been told that I can listen and hear.  Born with two ears and one mouth, I find the proportion just about right.  People usually like the food I prepare when they come to our  house for a dinner.  Cooking for fifteen or twenty at a Board meeting is not too much extra work. If the current board is like past boards, they like to eat and I am prepared to cook!

Let the Sign Up Continue
Room in the Inn will be happening again at Jubilee! the week of July 17—24.  We will be hosting twelve women who are without housing.  To make it happen we will need hosts, cooks, drivers and overnight innkeepers.  Can you help?  Sign up continues through July 10th.  Not in town to sign up?  No problem.  Just give Carol Greenspan a call at (828) 298-6066.

 The Mystical Kabbalah
…Saturday, July 16th, 10 am—1 pm
In an exploration of mystical spiritual traditions, the Adult Nurture Program presents the Mystical Kabbalah and Tree of Life.  Every tradition has it’s mystics. Sufis, gnostics, tantrics and taosists are all mystics, as are shamans, and medicine men. Even Christians had their mystics – Hildegard of Bingen, Meister Eckhart and Teresa of Avila.  All hold one thing in common, a commitment to the individual experience, intuitive understanding and realization of the meaning of ultimate truths. Kabbalists are Jewish mystics that study the tree of life – a map of the inner world and how to  successfully traverse it with grace and understanding.  Join Rich Fabio on July 16th, 10 am – 1 pm, to learn more about this mystical tradition and how it can be applied to this journey called life in a simple, practical way.  By Donation, but everyone is welcome!  Questions? Contact Jackie at [email protected] or rich at  This class is a Jubilee! Adult Nurture experience.
